“It’s got high mileage” kills more good deals than any other phrase in the used-car market. On budget cars, fair enough. On premium German vehicles, the odometer tells you far less than most buyers think — and fixating on it means overpaying for the wrong cars.
Engineering margins are different
Premium German drivetrains are engineered for sustained autobahn use — long periods at high load that most South African cars never see. The result is mechanical headroom: engines, gearboxes and drivetrains that, correctly maintained, pass 200,000–300,000 km without drama. The operative words are correctly maintained.
What actually wears a car
- Cold starts and short trips — a 90,000 km car that did 8 km school runs its whole life has had a harder engine life than a 150,000 km highway commuter.
- Skipped maintenance — oil intervals stretched “because it’s barely driven” do more damage than distance ever will.
- Hard use — launches, track days and towing show up in gearboxes, mounts and suspension long before the odometer looks scary.
The evidence that outranks the odometer
- Complete service history with sensible intervals — the single strongest predictor of future reliability.
- Consumable condition: tyres, discs, bushes and battery reveal how the car was treated and what you’ll spend next year.
- How it presents: interiors and steering wheels wear with use — a “60,000 km” car with a shiny worn wheel deserves questions.
- A test drive: tight steering, smooth shifts and even braking say more than any number on the cluster.
The opportunity for smart buyers
Because the market over-punishes mileage, well-maintained higher-mileage premium cars are often the best value on any showroom floor: the first owner absorbed the depreciation, and the service file proves the car’s real condition. Meanwhile low-mileage examples command premiums their condition doesn’t always justify.
