Buying your first financed car is a milestone — and the approval process is far less mysterious than it looks. Here’s exactly what South African banks check, what documents you need, and how to strengthen your application before you submit it.
The basic requirements
- A valid South African ID (or permit for foreign nationals) and a valid driver’s licence.
- Proof of income: usually your latest 3 payslips and 3 months’ bank statements. Self-employed applicants typically need 6 months’ statements and financials.
- Proof of residence not older than 3 months.
- A credit record — this is where most first-time buyers stumble, in both directions.
The credit record catch-22
No credit history is almost as challenging as bad credit history — the bank has nothing to score. If you’re planning a car purchase in 6–12 months, build a record now: a retail account or entry-level credit card, used lightly and paid in full every month, gives the bureaus something positive to report. Never miss a payment in the run-up to applying; recent behaviour weighs heavily.
Affordability: the NCA calculation
Under the National Credit Act, the bank must verify the instalment fits your budget after real expenses. They’ll look at your net income, existing debit orders and living costs from your statements. A useful private rule of thumb: keep the instalment under about 20–25% of take-home pay, and remember the true monthly cost adds comprehensive insurance (mandatory on financed cars, and priciest for young first-time drivers), fuel and maintenance.
Five ways to strengthen a first application
- Save a deposit. Even 10% meaningfully improves approval odds and the rate you’re offered.
- Buy realistic. Banks decline over-stretched applications; a solid, newer used car approves easier than a dream car at your limit.
- Clean your statements. Three months of no bounced debit orders, no gambling flags, and visible saving behaviour.
- Don’t apply everywhere at once yourself. Multiple hard enquiries in a short window look desperate. A dealership finance team submits one application to multiple banks simultaneously — one process, several offers.
- Get an insurance quote first so the total monthly picture holds no surprises.
